Vocabulary:
Focal areas - emphasize the most important aspect of a work of art.
Visual emphasis - focal area achieved by using the strongest light and dark value contrasts.
Color dominance - using color to emphasize an area in a painting.

Assignment:
Have class discussion on Emphasis and its meaning. Have students write definition at the top of page in sketchbook. Discuss different pictures and what is emphasis in each one (above).
Discuss mask and their roles in the different cultures. Show slideshow having students point out emphasis in the mask.

Have mask hand-outs available. Student will choose one mask, glue in sketchbook and color mask using color as emphasis. Once colored, have student draw arrows to the different emphasis areas of the mask.

Clay Mask Sketches:
Using "Mask Hand-Out" draw four mask sketches.
Choose your favorite. You will use this for your clay version.
Clay Assignment:
Using two packs of clay...create your foundation first.
Attach the pipe cleaner to the back.
Add nose, ear, eyes and mouth features first.
Add hair and other items next.
Add patterns and marks into the mask.
(While clay is drying move on to assignment two.)

Materials - Pencil, paper, mirror, markers and Portrait Hand-Out.

Assignment Two:
Self-Portrait
Materials - Pencil, paper, mirror, markers and Portrait Hand-Out.
1. Draw an oval shape and divide in half with a line down the middle of the oval.
2. Draw a line across the oval half-way through the oval. (This will be the middle of the eye line.)
3. Draw a line along the bottom of the chin.n (Chin line)
4. Draw a line in the middle of the chin line and the eye line. (This is the bottom of the nose line.)
5. Draw a line in the middle of the chin line and the nose line. (This becomes the middle of the mouth line.)
6. Begin by drawing the nose first. Draw two lines going straight up on each side of the nostrils. (This becomes the inside corner of the eyes and the beginning of the eyebrows.)
7. Draw the eyes (the line runs through them) and draw the eyebrows, lids & lashes.
9. Now move to the mouth area and draw the lips. The opening of the mouth is where the line should be going through.
10. Draw the ears. The top of the ears is at the eye line and the bottom of the ear is at the nose line.
11. Draw hair and add clothing to the profile.
12. Draw 13 sections behind the head and fill each section with a different texture.
13. Re-trace with a black marker except the guideline lines...erase them. (Erase all pencil)
